Why does taking more than 250 mgs or vitamin C daily cause false positives on guaiac fecal occult blood tests?

Guaiac tests are used to detect the presence of blood in stools, urine and some other body fluids. It non specific though. It reacts with the heme moeity of the hemoglobin to create a color reaction which indicates the presence of blood. Unfortunately other reducing substances can cause the same reaction with Guaiac, vitamin C included. Not eating meat is correct because the blood in the meat will also react with the Guaiac test and give a false (+) reaction. Heme oxidase based tests are more specific for blood but will still not differentiate your own blood from animal blood you ingested. Why does taking more than 250 mgs or vitamin C daily cause false positives on guaiac fecal occult blood tests?
Not sure why but there are several things to avoid while testing for hidden blood in the feces. It might be a dye in the vitamins or it might just naturally change the color of your stool. I believe your suppost to avoid red meat also. I do know that you don't want a positive hemoccult test because they will want you to go for a colonoscopy. Why does taking more than 250 mgs or vitamin C daily cause false positives on guaiac fecal occult blood tests?
Because you're putting the pills in the wrong end!
like with all things we need to build up sowly if we want to take high doseages of any pills. Be careful in the doing of this. and always do as the instructions says like have a meal or you will find that the pills never disppear int he stomach they lye there all night and they feel like stones.
